Winter tires in Quebec: the dates, the law, and the right time to book

In Quebec, every passenger vehicle registered in the province must be fitted with winter tires from December 1 to March 15. This isn't a recommendation, it's the Highway Safety Code. The tire has to carry the mountain and snowflake symbol.

Key points

  • Required from December 1 to March 15, whatever the weather is doing.
  • The tire must show the mountain and snowflake pictograph. An “M+S” marking on its own no longer qualifies.
  • A winter tire worn below 4.8 mm has lost most of its bite in snow.
  • Book in October. By the last week of November the appointment slots are gone.

The exact dates, and the date that actually matters

The mandatory period runs from December 1 to March 15 inclusive. It doesn't move with the forecast: a mild December changes nothing, the law applies from the 1st.

In practice the date worth watching is earlier. Once the temperature sits below 7 °C with any regularity, the rubber in an all-season tire stiffens and gives up grip, well before there's snow on the ground. In Repentigny that often means mid-October.

What the law asks of the tire itself

The tire has to carry the pictograph of a mountain with a snowflake inside it. That symbol, and not the older “M+S” marking, is what certifies performance in winter conditions.

There's a minimum tread depth too. A winter tire stays legal down to 1.6 mm, but that's a compliance threshold, not a safety one. Below roughly 4.8 mm a winter tire barely bites into packed snow. That's the first measurement we take when we look at a set at install time.

Why October and not November

Everyone calls in the last week of November. That's when the slots vanish at every shop in the area at the same time, and when you end up waiting a week on summer tires in an icy parking lot.

Book in October and you pick your time instead of taking what is left. It's the one part of the job you control completely.

Storage, and why it's worth it

A set of tires in the trunk or the shed takes up room, gets dirty, and goes out of shape if it's stacked badly. Storing them at the shop solves all three: your tires are already here at the next appointment, you carry nothing, and they sit properly between seasons.

Frequently asked questions

What are the winter tire dates in Quebec?

December 1 to March 15 inclusive. The period is set by the Highway Safety Code and doesn't change with the weather in a given year.

Are all-season tires allowed in winter in Quebec?

Only if they carry the mountain and snowflake symbol. Four-season tires certified for winter (often sold as all-weather tires) show it and are legal; tires marked only M+S are not. On snow and ice, a true winter tire is still the safer choice.

When should winter tires be replaced?

Once the tread drops below roughly 4.8 mm the tire barely bites into snow, even though it stays legal down to 1.6 mm. Age counts as well: the rubber hardens over the years, even on a tire that hasn't worn much.

When should I book my winter tire install?

In October. The last week of November is the worst time to call, because the whole region books at once.
